Here's something that surprises almost everyone who walks into our shop: buying a more powerful radio does not automatically mean you'll get better range.
It sounds wrong. It feels wrong. Surely a 5-watt radio reaches further than a 2-watt radio? Not necessarily. And understanding why could save you from buying the wrong radio entirely — or spending money on a problem that doesn't exist.
Let's break this down in plain language. No jargon. No engineering degree required. Just the honest truth about what actually makes a radio reach further. 😊
The Watt Myth — Explained
Power output — measured in watts — does play a role in radio range. But it's only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Think of it like a car engine. A bigger engine helps, but if your tyres are flat, your GPS is broken and you're driving on a dirt road, the extra horsepower isn't going to get you to Cape Town any faster.
"Doubling the power of a radio increases range by only about 40%. But a single concrete wall can reduce range by up to 90%."
Read that again. You could spend twice as much on a higher-powered radio and only gain 40% more range — but a single concrete wall between your staff members wipes out 90% of your signal regardless. Power is almost irrelevant if the environment is working against you.
So What Actually Determines Range?
There are four things that matter far more than watts:
Frequency Band — UHF vs VHF
This is the single biggest factor most people never consider. The frequency your radio operates on determines how signals travel through buildings, walls, and open spaces. Get this wrong and no amount of power will fix it.
Your Environment
Concrete, steel, brick, trees, hills — they all absorb and block radio signals. A radio that reaches 5km in an open field might only cover 200 metres inside a warehouse. The building matters as much as the radio.
Antenna Height & Quality
Radio signals travel in straight lines. The higher the antenna, the further the horizon — and the further the signal. A radio on the roof of a building will always outperform the same radio held at waist height.
Repeaters
A repeater receives your radio signal and instantly re-broadcasts it at full strength. One well-placed repeater can blanket an entire building, complex or industrial site — something no amount of watts can achieve on its own.
UHF vs VHF — The One Decision That Changes Everything
Most business radios operate on one of two frequency bands: UHF (Ultra High Frequency) or VHF (Very High Frequency). Neither is universally better — but choosing the wrong one for your environment is like buying winter tyres for a Joburg summer.
Very High Frequency
- Best for open outdoor spaces
- Longer range in flat terrain
- Great for farms, open sites, outdoor events
- Struggles indoors — walls block it easily
- Longer antenna required
Ultra High Frequency
- Best for buildings & urban environments
- Penetrates concrete, steel & brick
- Perfect for warehouses, malls, schools
- Shorter antenna — more compact radio
- Most business radios use UHF
For most South African businesses — shopping centres, schools, warehouses, security operations, industrial sites — UHF is the right choice. It navigates through walls, corridors, stairwells and floors in a way that VHF simply cannot.
But here's the catch: even a perfectly specified UHF radio, on the right frequency, programmed correctly — will still struggle in a large multi-building complex without a repeater. And this is where most businesses hit a wall. Literally.
The Repeater — Your Range's Best Friend
A repeater is a device that sits in a central location — on a rooftop, in a server room, on a mast — and acts as a signal relay. Your radio transmits to the repeater. The repeater instantly re-broadcasts your signal at full power across the entire coverage area.
A school in Alberton covers multiple buildings, sports fields, a parking area and a main gate. Without a repeater, radios in the admin block can't reliably reach staff at the far sports field. With a single repeater installed on the roof, every radio on the property — from the principal's office to the security guard at the gate — communicates instantly and clearly.
The power of the individual radios barely changed. The coverage area tripled. That's what a repeater does.
What This Means for Your Business
Before you buy more radios, or buy more powerful radios, ask yourself these three questions:
1. Are my staff mostly indoors or outdoors? Indoors = UHF. Outdoors = VHF. Mixed = UHF with a repeater.
2. How large is my coverage area? A single building of a few hundred square metres needs very different equipment to a multi-hectare industrial site or a large school campus.
3. Are my radios programmed correctly? A radio on the wrong frequency, or incorrectly programmed channels, will perform terribly — regardless of how much it cost. This is why programming matters as much as the radio itself.
At A2Z Radio Systems, we don't just sell you a radio and wave goodbye. We assess your environment, recommend the right frequency band, programme your radios correctly, and advise on whether a repeater would transform your coverage. Because the right radio, correctly set up, will always outperform a more powerful radio that's wrong for the job.
Only in Real Life 😄
A warehouse manager in Johannesburg was convinced his radios were faulty. "They barely reach 50 metres," he told us. "I need something more powerful."
We visited the site. The radios were fine. The problem? His warehouse had steel shelving from floor to ceiling, a metal roof, and concrete walls. He'd essentially built himself a giant radio signal cage. 😄
"We didn't need more power. We needed a repeater — and the right frequency."
One site visit, one repeater installation, and suddenly those same "faulty" radios were reaching every corner of his 4,000 square metre facility. The radios were never the problem. The setup was.
Not Sure What You Need?
